Water-based and portable measures
Extinguisher, hose reel and hydrant servicing
Portable extinguishers, hose reels and hydrant systems each carry their own inspection and test routines under the maintenance framework, from regular visual checks and tagging through to pressure and flow verification on longer cycles. They are the measures a brigade or occupant reaches for first, which is exactly why their records get scrutinised.
Scope
What this covers
Inspection, tagging and servicing of portable extinguishers
Hose reel operation checks, rewinding and leak repair
Hydrant valve, coupling and block plan checks with defects reported
Longer-cycle tests arranged when they fall due
Timing
When it's needed
Continuously, on the intervals applying to each equipment class. Buildings acquired mid-cycle or coming out of vacancy commonly need a full baseline service to re-establish tags and records before the statement cycle can run cleanly.
Never wedge open a fire door, block an exit path or leave a fire system isolated after works without a plan to restore it. If a measure is found inoperative in an occupied building, treat it as urgent and escalate the defect the day it is found.
Quote variables
What shapes the scope
Equipment counts and their spread across the site
Water supply arrangements for flow-related testing
Corrosion and vandalism exposure in car parks and external cabinets
Replacement versus service decisions on aged units
In NSW, the assessments behind an annual fire safety statement must be carried out by an accredited practitioner (fire safety), accreditation currently operates under the Fire Protection Association Australia scheme, while rectification work must be done by appropriately licensed or qualified trades for each measure. Ask who is accrediting the assessment and who is doing the physical work, and verify both.
